Details from this session

Do you suffer from impostor syndrome, not feeling qualified to do the stuff you do? How can you stop that from paralyzing you?

No matter what stage you are at in your career, it’s possible that you don’t feel like other people should really be paying you the attention they do.

You might feel like you don’t really know enough to be the one giving advice, standing on stage at conferences, or training and mentoring others.

In this episode we explored our own feelings of being impostors, and how we each manage to deal with this weird experience as we go about our jobs as consultants and instructors.

TL;DR =

  • Take on new challenges but admit where you might need help.
  • Bite off small chunks, each of which progresses towards your larger goal.
  • Know that if you have interesting data or something new to say, it doesn’t matter so much about your level of personal experience.

For instance if you feel you’d be an impostor for presenting at a conference, start by writing out what you want to talk about. Then present to your team or a small, supportive audience. Identify areas you might want help – coaching on speaking, assistance with slides, or whatever. Build up to the on-stage conference experience.
